Study Notes:

For many years many of our power users have relied on the Trader Workstation to provide them with the most advanced technology.  For those that don’t need all the advanced tools that the Trader Workstation has to offer, we also provide a simple-to-use HTML based trading platform, the Client Portal. Here clients will find just about everything they need to trade, view news, reports, statements and more.

Client Portal enables clients of Interactive Brokers to stay connected to what matters, as well as to access key features and services in their accounts. In a world where news that drives trading rarely ever stops, investors want to access their accounts from multiple devices and around the clock. Client Portal not only provides users with access to details about their accounts, but also allows them to trade using a single log in. This course walks you through the many capabilities of Client Portal.

  • To access Client Portal, click the Login button from any page on the IBKR website.
  • The expanded menu displays Client Portal Login immediately beneath in the expansion menu.  Click the Portal Login button.
  • Enter your username and password details, choose between Live and Paper account type and click the Login button. If you are using a security device, you will be prompted to authenticate your credentials.
  • If you use secure login, follow the prompts after you click the Login button.

Navigating Client Portal

When you wish to log out of Client Portal later, locate and click on the User Menu icon in the upper right corner of the screen and select the Log-out button to the bottom of the display.

You will always find the Client Portal menu accessible from the three horizontal bars in the upper left of the screen. Clicking this icon reveals the Application menu to the left. Use the X in the upper right f the Application Menu to close.

The homepage displays several summary panels or widgets, which show users’ Portfolio Positions, latest news, links to a variety of Account settings, Watchlist favorites and Portfolio Analyst.

Client Portal allows users to see multiple widgets from a single login. Behind them is a wealth of information. Each widget is designed to show you a tip of the iceberg display and by clicking the arrow in the upper right of each tile, you dive deeper and see the big picture. For example, clicking the arrow in the Market Overview panel will display a selection of market data and news.

Click the left arrow next to the page description to return to the Client Portal homepage.

Click a news headline to open a pop-up view for an article.

When finished, click the Close button at the bottom of the page. Click the Back arrow in your browser to return to the Client Portal home page.

Each panel displayed on the Client Portal home page represents an item available from the Application menu.

Above are Tools and Services, while listed below are links to information about IBKR’s Other Trading Platforms.

You will notice from the Application menu that several items have a dropdown arrow to the right indicating that the menu may be expanded to reveal pages available within that menu.

Clicking any of those links will then redirect you to the appropriate area. Click on the contract arrow at the category level to hide the display.

Trade

From within Client Portal, users can place and manage trades from the Trade button in the upper right corner of the screen. Clicking the Trade button will open an Order Ticket with several input fields.

By entering a symbol, you will bring up the contract selection menu. Locate and click on the specific product selection on the appropriate exchange.

Choose by clicking on Buy order or Sell order. Note that at the bottom of the Order ticket the Submit Order button will be Blue for Buy orders or Red for Sell orders as you make your selection.

Enter the quantity, in this case the number of shares to submit. Users may type in a number and use the Up and Down symbols to change the order amount.

Choose from the Order Type dropdown menu, how you want to submit your order. The selection may differ according to the asset class you have chosen, availability on a specific exchange or according to the users’ account type.

Depending on your choice of Order Type, select a price in the adjoining field, although this input field will disappear when choosing Market orders.

Choose from the available selections in the Time-in-Force dropdown menu.

Use the slider to turn on and off the Outside Regular Trading Hours function.

Select Preview should you wish to further review your order. On this screen you will also see applicable commissions and the margin impact of the trade should it execute.

Users may use the Transmit Order button at the bottom of the Order Preview or else return to their order by using the back button. From the original order ticket, click on the Submit button to send your order.

Abandon an order and return to Client Portal by clicking the X to the upper left of the open Order Ticket.

Client Portal is easy to access and easy to navigate.
