The sale of shares that you do not own. A short sale involves delivery of the purchased shares to the buyer on the settlement date, and so requires that you borrow shares to deliver. Short sellers hope that the share price drops after the short sale, allowing them to purchase shares of the same underlying at a lower price in the future to make a profit.
